The 1996 growing season will be remembered well among Washington grape growers as it was the year of the big freeze. February brought unseasonably warm weather, leaving the vines vulnerable. A sudden freeze damaged many fruitful buds. Crops were 35% to 40% lower than anticipated, particularly for red grape varietals. A mild spring and hot summer brought a small harvest of very good quality fruit.
